How to Use Light Mode in Windows 11 While Keeping the Taskbar Dark
Windows 11 includes a “Custom” mode that allows you to use light mode for apps and windows while keeping the taskbar, Start menu, and system interface in dark mode. This is helpful if you prefer bright applications but want a darker, cleaner taskbar.
Follow the steps below to configure this setup.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Click the Start button
Select Settings
—or press Windows + I
2. Go to Personalization
In the left-hand menu, choose Personalization
Then click Colors
3. Choose “Custom” Mode

This unlocks separate settings for Windows (system) mode and app mode.
4. Set Light Mode for Apps
Under the new options:
Choose your default app mode: Select Light
This makes File Explorer, Settings, Microsoft Office, and other apps use a light theme.
5. Set Windows Mode to Dark (This Controls the Taskbar)
Now change:
Choose your default Windows mode: Select Dark
This specifically affects:
Taskbar
Start menu
System tray
Quick Settings panel
Notification Center
Your apps will be light, but your taskbar and Start menu will stay dark.
Optional Customizations
A. Disable Transparency (to make the taskbar solid dark)
Stay in Personalization > Colors
Toggle Transparency effects → Off
B. Apply a Dark Accent Color
Scroll down to Accent color
Choose Manual
Pick a darker color
Turn Show accent color on Start and taskbar ON (if your build supports it)
This gives your taskbar a deeper, more consistent dark tone.
